A part of a dam in Bhagalpur's Kahalgaon city collapsed on Tuesday, hours before it was to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. According to reports, the wall of the dam collapsed when water from Ganga River hit it after the pump was switched on for the trial run.

The overflowing water inundated areas in NTPC Township and civil areas, including the residence of Kahalgaon civil judge and several other homes of low-lying areas.

The dam, which was built at an estimated cost of Rs 389.31 crore, is part of the Gateshwar Panth Canal Project planned to improve land irrigation system in the region. The total irrigation capacity of the project is 27,603 hectares, out of which 22,816 is in Bihar and 4,887 hectares in Jharkhand.

According to the Minister of Water Resources, Lallan Singh, the part of the dam collapsed due to release of water in full capacity. Meanwhile, the ex-deputy chief minister of Bihar, Tejaswi Yadav attributed this collapse to rampant corruption under CM Nitish Kumar.

The state has recently faced criticism in the latest CAG report for not taking care of safety issues in embankments.

  • This is a glaring example of rampant corruption prevailing in Bihar. Nitish Kumar is most useless CM who miserably failed to curb CORRUPTION in Bihar. BJP has done blunder by aligning with shameless and corrupt Nitish in joining govt which will tarnish the image of BJP in public domain completely. Nitish and Laloo have sealed fate of 11 crore people of the state by corrupt and worst governance in last 25 years. In first 15 years, Laloo virtually destroyed Bihar and imposed JUNGLE RAJ by spreading anarchy, goondaism, Naxalism, Bank robbery, massive Corruption etc. Subsequently, Nitish Kumar ruled the state by experimenting by installing corrupt and incompetent Jeetanram Manjhi as CM and thereafter aligning with RJD resulted in complete Jungle raj and massive unchecked rampant CORRUPTION accelerated by Laloo's son and JD(U) leaders. There is no significant progress anywhere in the state. Now BJP has aligned with Corrupt Nitish tarnishing its image which is condemned in public domain. It is now a foremost responsibility of BJP leadership to speed up activity and curb in CORRUPTION completely by hanging all CORRUPTS especially corrupt politicians responsible for poverty and backwardness of state. BJP should install own CM rather than relying on bluffer Nitish who is not interested in changing present scenario of state so that he remains in power in future.
